Editorial: Security cameras needed in schools
To most, the idea of security cameras in public schools is a wise use of modern technology to further ensure the safety of students. To some, however, there are the overtones of a Big Brother government spying on them. The plan to put surveillance cameras at the entrance to the commons areas at North and South high schools and at the entrance to Cleveland Elementary School fall into the category of ensuring safety. The commons areas at the two high schools are recent additions that aren't covered by existing camera surveillance. Just the increased traffic from public use of the new fitness centers and field houses requires greater diligence. Also, the commons areas are the new main entrances to the two schools. At Cleveland, the school entrance is a considerable distance from the main office, making it hard for school personnel to monitor who's coming into the building.
